We are in the process of purchasing a Bristol 35.5. The boat is located in Weehawken, NJ. Can anyone recommend any surveyors for hull and engine [Universal] located in that vicinity?

Thanks for your question. While I've developed a personal list of 20 top-notch surveyors around the country, unfortunately none that I have on my list work in the Weehawken area. Still, I think I can offer you a few good words of advice about finding a surveyor.
I almost always find that local boatyards are the best source for surveyor referrals, with brokers running a close second. (And you can always find surveyors in the phone book and then talk directly to them as part of your initial research.) Of course there are also two professional organizations for surveyors, and both have websites that list their members by state. But I'd first suggest you ask for a referral. (The websites are www.namsurveyors.org and www.marinesurvey.org.)
Regarding engines, some surveyors are excellent judges of them, while others are not. If you feel you need an independent engine survey (standard procedure with larger powerboats, but rare with sailboats), then you should contact the yard where the boat is docked, stored, or where it will be hauled out for the survey.
