Evaluating the MacGregor 26

I'm looking at buying a MacGregor 26. I know it is not a high-ticket item, but I still like it for several reasons. Among them are the following:

1. affordable
2. the centerboard retracts, which is good for beaching
3. interchangeable (sailing/motoring)
4. good for not-so-novice a sailor
5. main use would be weekends w/possible passage to the Bahamas (I live in Miami) and the Keys

So what do you think about the MacGregor 26?

Sue & Larry respond:
Whenever any of us look at buying a boat, so many factors must be taken into consideration. It looks like you already know what you want in a boat, and have researched what is available in your price range. Certainly the MacGregor 26 would be fine and enjoyable for weekend sailing.

As for making passages to the Bahamas, the MacGregor 26 is not a boat built for offshore sailing and would not be the first boat in this size range that we would choose for crossing the Gulf Stream. Of course, as long as you choose your weather window wisely, you can probably paddle a canoe to the Bahamas. Regardless of the boat you decide to make passages to the Bahamas in, make sure you have suitable safety equipment onboard, and for added fun and safety, find a buddy boat to go with and stay in touch by radio en route. Enjoy your sailing!
