Refitting a 52'''' ketch

We are looking at buying a steel, 52'' center cockpit ketch with a 16'' beam that needs some work. The masts are wood and need refinishing. The owner says it was done 3-4 years ago, but needs it again. Also some of the rigging should be replaced.

The question is, would we be better off in replacing the entire rigging and masts with new aluminum masts, roller furling, etc.? We would like to rig it so that it is as close as possible for single hand sailing.

Next Q: What would be an average cost of a good set of sails for a 52'' ketch with a 62'' masthead height?

Most of the work needed for this boat is of the type that we can do ourselves. It is the big ticket items that we have serious questions about before committing to buying it. It needs to be hauled out, sandblasted and painted, but just about everything else can be done over time by us as it is only cosmetic work.

Any thoughts or suggestions on these questions would be most helpful.

Thanks,

Lazlo & Synn
