I''ve been using Progressive but I decided to get some quotes for a boat which I just bought. There is a wide range. BoatUS was twice the premium cost as Progressive, for instance. Anybody care to weigh in here with recommendations or experiences?

coondogger,

We insured our boat with Allstate for $100K, homeport in FL and valid anywhere within 100nm of lower 48 states. The premium was less than $500 per year and when hurricane Charley did almost $25K in damage to our boat, we had a check in less than 2 weeks with a written promise to pay more if justified.

Others'' experiences may differ, but we feel we did well with Allstate. BTW, our boat is only 5 years old; the age will make a difference to many insurance companies.

Good luck,

Duane

Just went through the insurance hassle, buying a 14 year old boat. Allstate is not writing policies at this time (probably because they had to send out a lot of "timely" checks after Charley). West Marine/BoatUS will not write policies on boats older than 10 years. Got a good deal from NBOA (National Boat Owners Association) 800 248-3512) who just shortened eleigibilty from 20 years to 15 years.
