cracked skeg T37

Hi, I have been looking at a 1978 Tartan 37 which is for sale. The boat seems very well kept up with the exception of the following: The skeg where it attaches to the boat has a large crack and can be moved (1/4” - 1/2”) at the bottom of the skeg when applied with pressure. It puzzles me that this has not been repaired or that a repair is not holding. Is this a common problem with the T37C’s?

It sounds like she was put aground. Have it inspected together with the rudder post.

I suggest joining the Tartan email list here on Sailnet and asking the question there. Lots better chance of getting info from some T-37 owners who have experience with that problem than you''ll have here on this board from someone who may have been on a T-37 once.

Also, get an opinion from the best surveyor you can find.

Other opinions may vary of course.

The tartan 37 is a very well made boat. I purchased one a year ago that needed a total refit. It will hold it''s value for many years to come. If you can do the work yourself you could have a great boat. The skeg is removable you can go to the tartan website and order a knew one. Have a survey done and take the price of the repair off the boat.
