Waquiez Amphitrite 43

Hello,

I am considering an older (75) Waquiez Amphitrite 43 with a Peugeot diesel and transmission. Can anyone comment on these boats in general and specifically about the Peugeot drivetrain, parts availability, etc.

Thank You,

Malcolm Fraser

Wauquiez has a reputation as a good builder. The Hood 38''s they built still command respectable prices, even though they are decades old. I visited the production facility (a long time ago, and just, looking) and was impressed by the fine joinery and woodwork. No smells of uncured resin or catylist. Everything was kept neatly, and even in a boat under construction there was was no sawdust left around at the end of the day.

For the engine, I can only mention that we had a Peugeot diesel car at one point. We let it overheat because of a leak in the radiator, and had to replace the head, a cylinder or two, and some other stuff when it blew. Otherwise, it ran well (100k?) until a head-on ncounter with anotther vehicle and we cut our losses. Replacement parts and servicing might be a problem, even if you''re cruising abroad. Most French cruisers seem to have Volvo or Renault diesels these days. The transmission should be pretty tough. I think Peugeot still promotes the Paris-Dakar road race, and I believe they also provide tank transmissions for the French Army.
