Alohas

Hi All

I''ve been sailing for about 30 years. I''ve sailed on a Sunfish, Cape Dory Typhoon, J-24, Cape Dory 33, Mariner 36, Hinckley 43 (only 19 of those around I believe), and a Beneteau First 456. These have been both boats owned by my extended family and owned by friends. It''s been mostly coastal sailing and racing with a few offshore trips to Bermuda and the straight run from Block Island to Cape May (if you consider that offshore). So it''s about time I got my own boat and stop bumming boats from those around me.

I plan on doing mostly coastal sailing and island hopping through the Caribbean. This would of course include living aboard for the season at least. The boat should be capable of some offshore sailing as I''d like to get to the Virgins via Bermuda (from Maine). I''ve been researching my options for a few years now and am about ready to buy.

I like a boat with a fin keel and a skeg hung rudder but am open to spade rudders. Something I can make good time on passage with. Between 28 and 35 feet would be good. Much of my travels will be singlehanding with one crew member occasionally. I''ve got about 50,000 to spend with another 15,000 for commisioning and repairs.

I am open to all suggestions but am particularly curious about Alohas. The 32 and 34 appeal to me although I''ve not sailed one (yet). I''ve been to the owners websight but as usual they have nothing but glowing reports to give. I''d like a more balanced opinion. I''m curious about build quality and any thoughts on how they handle in a variety of conditions. Feel free to suggest other boats as well.

Thanks in advance for your time and opinions.

Chris:

You may want to view this website and contact the owner of Meriah. The owner has sailed Meriah (an Aloha 32) to Newfoundland, Labrador and Greenland in several voyages. I stumbled across the site several years ago – he has a nice collection of photos but I’m not sure of what boat modifications he made.
