salvaging halyards

I''m considering purchasing a boat that for the most part seems to be a pretty good deal. One item of concern is that the boat was left rigged on a trailer all of last year leaving otherwise good running rigging hard as rock. I''ve been told that as long as the lines aren''t frayed they''ll be fine and that you can run them through a washing machine in a pillowcase and they''ll soften up again.

Any thoughts?

Trailor boat so I am guessing you are not going to be offshore. Try it and see what happens. I have no idea if that will work. On the other hand - if the price of new halyards is not a huge concern - replace them becasue you will feel better. Another important factor is the age of the boat. If over ten years I would say replace them - though fresh water halyards can last much longer. Also, lines that are easy to handle are much better. My thoughts.

Yes, you can wash the lines in a washing machine and it will make a big difference. I''ve done it.

It can''t hurt to at least try it. If you''re not happy with the results, you can replace the lines then.

Regards,

Tim
