Pre86 O''Day vs Post 86 O''day

I currently have a 1986 ODay192 and looking to move up. I''ve been told that latter Odays were not built to the same quality standards as earlier models. Also, did the hull bottom change. I saw a 1984 Oday28 fin keel in Mystic Conn. and the bottom was flat similar to my 19''. In the same yard was a 272 and its hull bottom was more ''V'' shaped. Does the hull shape affect the ride in choppy waters?

Odays changed their designs through the years. The cruising boats were never designed or built for the discriminating buyer but are a good value for cruising long island sound. The more V shaped the hull the less pounding you will get in the sloppy water. The more V the less interior space...

I agree that the O''Day boats did not improve as they became newer. I considered an 86 O''Day 28 and found it only had a single cylinder diesel wheezer for a motor. Purchased a Pearson 28 and it is a much better boat all around. Look at details like the ports and interior quality. Suggest you look at other brands.

Thanks for the infor Peter and Kaare. I saw an 1989 Oday280 and was I surprised at how small it was compared to the 84 Oday28. The quality of the interior was poor. I like your suggestion about the Pearsons. I was informed by the boat yard broker that an 86 Pearson will soon be on the selling block. Looks good.

While shopping for a used sailboat boat in the 28 ft range, I recently had the opportunity to examine a 1982 O''Day and a 1989 O''Day literaly side by side. The ''82 was a better boat in every respect.

The O'day 28 was a completely different boat from the 280. The 28 was earlier models built for the O'day yacht line and was much wider,heavier, and better sailing boat. The 280 was basically a 272 hull with a new deck and interior. It was a really dog of a boat. It was one of the last models that O'day built and helped put O''day out of business. I also don,t believe that any of the O'day 28s were manufactured with 1 cylinder engines although some of the early ones had OMC saildrives.
