Honda , Mercury or Yamaha ?

I just purchased an 11 ft. inflatable and need to buy a motor . I'm looking for a new 5 -6 hp. outboard . It will be used in fresh water 99% of the time . I like the fact the honda and yamaha are twin cylinders but the mercury weighs less . looking for experienced opinions.

don't overlook Tohatsu outboards.... ususally a bit less expensive and have a fine reputation.

The only 2-cylinder 6hp that I know of is the Yamaha. (They don't make a 5hp.) It's a 4-stroke and weighs 81pds. Since the Yamaha 8hp is the same size and weight - 81pds - you might as well get the 8hp for a few extra bucks.

Yamaha out of that group. I have a little 3hp that does great.

I have a two-stroke Merc 5 that has been reliable and served me well. The Honda and Yamaha four strokes will be quieter and may be more efficient but they are substantially heavier. It may turn on whether you will be leaving it on the dink or taking it off a lot. Those extra pounds will be a pain in the neck and back when it comes time to lift and move the larger engine.

I love my mercs, i have an 8.0 and and a 3.? the 8.0 is 4 stroke 2 cyl (main auxillary) and the 3.? is 2 stroke 1 cyl.(inflatable power source) both have served me well. but I'm sure others have different opinions.

G- I wondered that too...

Nissan & Mercury 5 hp 2 strokes are both Tohatsu motors. Interestingly Nissan offers double the warranty. We have had great luck with the 5 hp Nissans, preferring the built-in tank model for tenders - leaves more room in the dinghy, gravity feed so no priming, hoses etc. Also had one on our 24 foot racer, got about an hour from a tank.
