Headroom question

I have noticed that headroom is not always indicated in boat specs. I am considering a boat for extended cruising but I think the headroom is only 5'11" and I am over 6', would that be enough reason to back off if everything else was OK.

If you are going to be primarily sailing I do not feel that head-room will be a huge issue. If you are going to be primarily in port it might be. Think about what activities you'll be doing and how often full head room would be necessary. One can certainly cook with one's head tilted. For comparison purposes evaluate how often you are actually upright while in your home. Objects that protrude into the given head-room would be more of an issue (how many times can you bang your head into the same damn thing? Wear a baseball cap for evaluating this phenomona-you'll be amazed at what you'll run into.)

As far these things being published-if she's got a face like a madonna and a butt like a barge, how would you sell her?

Most of the time you are below, you are not standing as a general rule. The one place that headroom is often useful is the head... where getting back into foul weather gear is difficult if you can't stand up.

I don't know of any boat manufacturers that publish headroom as a general statistic for their boats. It also varies quite a bit within a given boat.

What you should be more concerned with is the length of the berths... if you will have one that you can comfortably lie down in without being crowded.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
