I don't know of any cost-effective alternatives to buying a boat. Most charter companies don't do long-term charters at a rate that is affordable, but you could talk to one of them and see if you could work something out. Your best bet is going through a private owner, though most private owners I know would not want to risk their sailboat in unknown hands for any amount of time, much less six-months.

Part of the problem is insurance and liability. Most private owners can't lease/charter their boats due to restrictions on their insurance, and most companies won't do it because it is more profitable for them to do weekly/weekend charters.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
