Moody 46?

Looking at a 2000 vintage (in great shape) Moody46 for liveaboard for two and significant offshore use. Any thoughts regarding this boat?

We love our older 47 [1985], we are full time cruisers. You might want to ask the question on the sailnet email list [which hits the US owners group] and on the Moody UK owners web site. Lots more owners found there especially of the newer boats.

Orthomartin...we looked seriously at Moody's back a few years ago since they were one of the few CC boats being made in our size range. They are definitely blue-water capable and have well executed and striking interiors that are well above the standard of production boats. What I did not like was that stuff that could not be seen did not seem to be up to the same standard as the stuff designed to catch the eye. One example I recall was that marine plywood was left with exposed edges and not sealed to prevent moisture ingress. Ultimately, we thought that the boat was suitable to our purpose but overpriced vs. boats like Hylas and Passport which we felt were built better overall. Much of that may simply have been the exchange rate. So...I guess my advice is that the boat should be fine for your intended use and especially so if you can get her at a good price...but look carefully in the bilges, behind the settees, at the chainplates etc. and make sure that all the underlying systems and constuction are to your standards and in good shape. They really are gorgeous boats and will stop traffic on any dock! Good luck.

thanks

This is actually a 2001, fresh water greatlakes boat. Less then 400 engine hours and meticulouly maintained. Heated indoor storage and the like. I have been searching mostly for a hylas late model but this moody given the fresh water etc has really caught my eye. Am flying this weekend to take a close look. I guess in the back of my head I am wondering down the road would I regret not going with the Hylas as I do like them. This is however the first moody I will have seen. Again I really appreciate the imput from all members. Can't wait to join the ranks of you full time cruisers!!
