My Short List

Yes, I can see where my short list would appear at first glance to be all over the place, but if you drop the Morgan 42 (maybe too old and too big a horse), and the Bristol 40 (too short waterline, too narrow), the others are not all that far apart in many respects.
My sailing experience is eight years with a Bristol 22, and fifteen years with a Charlie Morgan designed Columbia 34. For the past three years we have been running an Alura 30 pilot cruiser, but the plan has been to get back to a nice cruiser. Mostly coastal cruising off the New England coast, and later who knows what.
My first choice is the Bristol 35.5 with a fixed keel, but these are hard to find and command a premium price. The Niagra 35 looks to be a quality cruiser with good sailing charecteristics, and a great underbody shape. The Islander 36 and the Cal 39 seem like good solid cruisers if not a little plain, and the Morgan 38 series 382, 383, and 384 all seem to have a large dedicated following. The Catalina 38 of that era has that good looking tumblehome hull, and as far as I have been able to determine they are pretty well thought of. The Gulfstar has me puzzled a bit. The specs look strong although a bit shallow draft (4''9") for her size. There are a couple of very clean ones available, they reportedly have a solid glass hull, and though I don''t recall what they look like close up, the photos show a nice sheer with good looking all around design above the waterline.
Well, that''s what I''m thinking. Possibly there are others that I have missed, and maybe you might see something in one of these models that should cause it to be droped from the list. If I have clarified my search any, maybe you can help me. Appreciate your thoughts. John Gov.
