awlgrip touch-up

Has anyone ever gotten good results, or seen good results, from touch-ups with dark awlgrip paint on a hull? Even if you can match the color, the problem seems to be that you can't really blend or feather the seams between the old paint and the new paint. Also, the new paint will have a higher gloss. I say 'touch-up'... the boat was beached and the .6 oz re-touch kit from the company will not be sufficient to cover the blemishes. There are two spots, one on either side about 3' X 2'. There is no real damage... this is just cosmetic. From what I gather, the best thing to do is cover the spots with a liquid wax to prevent water damage to the surrounding paint, and wait until the boat can be hauled out and totally repainted. One gentleman who tried major touch-ups with hunter green said that his boat came out looking like a gecko with a skin disease...

The main knock on Awlgrip has always been it's difficulty to repair/retouch.

We have managed to do some superficial touchups (transom edges, e.g.) by using a foam brush and some left over paint from the original job. You're right, the gloss is higher esp if some time has passed, but that does even up after a while, and in any event it looked better than the scarred paint.

We never tried an area the size that you describe.... but it occurs to me that if you rolled/brushed a coat on you may get some decent results by wet sanding it with 600 to 1000 grit (after curing) and then perhaps trying some Awlcare?

I've seen such a repair by a professional yard (though they sprayed the patch) and it looked alright to me - though I saw that boat last month and it had been completely repainted again (several years on)

Many are pushing the newer interlux products these days for their easier repairability.

don't even think about it. Won't work. Even on a brand new AWG paint job a professional can't repair minor dings without noticeable shadowing being visible. We had this happen in 2005 when the yard dinged their own paint job within a couple of weeks. Had to repaint the entire side of the boa despite several attempts to blend. Thank goodness it was on them!
