Humor at the Boat Show

So I'm wandering around the Boat Show yest... See the Hallberg-Rassy rep and their ONE boat... A center cockpit boat and I really don't like CC boats.
We get to talking and I say how much I like the 33' MISTRAL design from the early 70's. Would love to have one.
Well he looks at me like I'm nuts and says something to the effect of why would you want an old boat, you don't drive an old car...why sail a 30 year old design.

We chat a minute or so, he expounds on why new boats are SOOOooooo much better and then says again, you don't want an old car; What kind of car do you drive.
I start chuckling, my Lady Friend starts chuckling and then I say "1986 Porsche" He kinda stops, doesn't say anything and we walk off laughing.
Some people just don't get it.

I checked out one of the big catamarans and the lady asked me to fill out the information card before boarding. She said "fill in all of the info you want to", then she paused and said "but you probably don't want to fill in anything". Very perceptive! Just lemme see the boat.

PS: Why does a 4-cabin catamaran need 6 heads?????

Don't think of them as heads, theing of them as closets with a toilet... ie, the more space to put shoes!!

And the ISLAND PACKETS w/ those wide-a$$ sterns. Ugh, LY!
They had a motorsailor there that even Lady Friend thought was Fugly.
I've been trying to edjumacate her on what a boat should look like; she has figured out that HINCKLEY = pretty. And some of the older boats we sometimes see. Explained the whole concept of "looking back factor" as you row away from your boat.

Maybe she's a keeper. She liked the Shannon, the Malo, picked up on how cheaply/cheesily made the Jeanneau's were, Beneteau's also.
Liked the Sabre386 and the Tartan models.

I think I might just get an old Hinckley 35Pilot or 38, like the Tartan 37 'cepting for the cored hull issue, but....

Oh well, time to rack out. I've been riding herd on 17, yes 17, 12 and 13 y.o. boys, only one of which is mine. 6 left, the rest are spending the night. I need my head examined.

Umm... CD would be a good reason... if he's visiting your boat, you'll be happy to have six heads aboard.

We were in the saloon of the Caliber 40LRC as the dealer explained the design features and advantages of their removeable cutter forestay, when a, shall we say "shapely" young lass came below. Her attire was designed to enhance and display her ample assets, and it did not go unnoticed. My buddy and I exchanged glances to make sure neither missed the view, and the dealer stopped mid-sentence. Then said, he'd lost his train of thought. We all recovered quickly and moved on, but it was a funny few seconds.

As far as the wide sterns, did anyone look at the Tartans? The rear end of those things looked HUGE.

I guess cheap is in the eye of the wallet holder, but I thought the Jeanneau 36i looked pretty decent for production boat. I've been thinking it might be a candidate but reading about the lack of customer service from the factory gives me pause. Anyone that doubts that every boat is a compromise, should try to find a performance cruiser for around $80k, 35-38 feet with shoal draft and non-cored hull. That critera rules out proven "bluewater" capable boats like the Tartan 37 and Saber 36/38, but leaves in boats like a Jeanneau or Beneteau. There are other candidates but they tend to be few and far between even in a sailing mecca like the Chesapeake.

I thought the Tartans looked pretty good, but all I could think about was the hull issue thread.

I mentioned to the dealer that I was considering a T34c, and he grimaced and said they had cored hulls. I reminded him that I was talking about the Classic, and he repeated the line about cored hulls and how they were all supposedly delaminating. I didn't know whether to credit his comments to ignorance or the push to sell me something new.
