Tartan Keel Change
Is it feasible to change the keel on a 2000 to 2005 Tartan 34 or 35 ft. boat from a shoal draft to a deeper keel? I need to know this in connection with a purchase of an east coat boat for use in the Puget Area. Thanks

Search some of the other Tartan threads.... seems to me this was discussed as do-able recently....

On ALL Tartans, you can change out from shoal, to CB to deep draft keels. They were designed that way! So if looking at an east coast rig, and you want the deep draft for here int he sound, no big deal! marine Servicenter ie local dealer should be able to order you a deep keel, and install it when the boat gets out here before going into the water. Of course, I am assuming you are trucking it out here!

If it is a xx00 model Tartan, I believe the keels are modular. I believe they can be swapped out fairly easily.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I'm quite sure the older Tartans are not that way. The newer 3400 definetly can be changed. I'm not sure about the 3500.

Hello,
There is 'easy' and there is 'easy'.
What is the cost of the swap?
That may change your definition.

I have a 1977 T-37 and it has internal balast, so unless you're looking at a HUGE rebuild....The Tartan TOCK, T-34C, T-27, T-40 all have keels that are internal balast

It would be nice if you actually read the first post. He's talking about Tartans that were made between 2000-2005, which were probably all xx00 series boats, as I don't believe they made the T34C, that recently. IIRC, it was discontinued in the 80's or so.
The other boats aren't even close in size to what he's talking about, since he clearly mentioned 34' or 35' boats.

having looked at the XX00's as mentioned, ALL of the ones I have looked at per the local Tartan dealer, and from what I can tell, "ARE" able to change out the keels from a shoal, to a deep, to a CB version. As you can with the most recent built C&C models with multiple keel options! As far as the older versions, all bets are off! But the yrs the OP is looking at, no problemo!
