I just bought a 100/300/100 Liability policy on a wooden 1961 sailing yacht today with no survey. It was under $400 per yr and was from Progressive.

Have you tried contacting the usual insurance companies i.e. State Farm, Allstate etc. Although I have a Home Owners policy, I got a $1 million umbrella policy for only a few hundred $’s per year.

I went through alot of issues for insurance when I tried to do mine...Contacted a local insurance rep, then went online and tried to do it (research right) ...well when I was contacted by the local insurance rep, they stated that they couldn't get a quote as I was already in the system and asked me "did you try and get a quote online - that is why"..
I ended up using BoatUS.com's insurance....290 a year (and it was cheaper than any other quote)...

For what it's worth - my wife is an insurance agent. She tells me that to get hull insurance on a boat over 30 years old is difficult. Also, if you're a live-aboard - look at contents insurance if you have valuables - computers stereos, cameras, jewelry, etc. We saved quite a bit on insurance because we both had taken boating courses through U.S. Power Squadron.

I got my insurance policy through State Farm, the same company I use to insure my vehicle. They wanted to see a survey just to have some verification of the boat's worth. I showed them the survey from the purchase and they were fine with it.

Generally, there are two types of boat surveys, Insurance and Purchase. Insurance is the one that says "the boat will neither burn on land nor sink in water, or it won't if you get these problems fixed or brought up to current code". Purchase surveys look at the whole package and provide a basis on which to negotiate price breaks or compromises. Generally, insurers don't care about dirty hulls and crusty halyards!
I found that insuring my 35 year old boat as a rider on my house insurance was $600/year, while going with a "yacht insurer" dropped it to less than $400, and it hasn't budged a penny in seven years. I have issued the firm insurance surveys every five or six seasons, along with annotations indicating where I had made improvements or fixed old problems.
Note that customarily, it is things like your Zodiac or outboard that gets stolen, or your gear should the boat be robbed. Total loss of the boat is relatively rare, and I would say more boats are destroyed in winter layup via yard fires or hurricanes than at sea...so take your stuff off the boat.
I have power tools on board mine right now, but that's not usually the case. Most of my electronics are at home.

Just closed on a 1981 39' Gulfstar Sailmaster and used Mariners Insurance:

They used Markel American Insurance Co.
Much cheaper than everyone else (especially BoatUS) with better coverage.
We are paying $1906.88 a year full coverage.
By the way we are keeping our boat in Halifax Harbor, Daytona Beach, FL.

Gieco won't cover boats over 30, even as part of an umbrella plan.
