Blue water cruising boats

I am interested in a list of blue water cruising boats in the 37 to 42 foot range. Am currently boat shopping in the Florida area and want a boat a couple can handle well to sail the east coast, islands and also further should we desire. Want to look at as many blue water boats as possible. My list that I have so far:

Xnavy, I''d encourage you to add Hallberg-Rassy to your list. To ''watch'' a well-built boat being constructed, visit their website. Examples of what I''d like to see other builders emulate are fully laminating together the hull & deck fully (no leaks), imbedding stubs in the layup for the stanchions (no penetrations), and then grinding smooth and painting the entire inside before anything is installed. This means everything built into the boat came thru the companionway...and can come out the same way.

Suggest you keep in mind that there are many views on what a ''bluewater boat'' might be - your list could almost be infinite - and that you''ll pay far more in some cases for that last 10% of capability that you may never use.

I think it is instructive to have lists (I have lists for my lists . I might suggest that rather than list builders first, you first make a list of desired qualities: solid glass hull, beefy rig, quality joinery below, cabin layout and much much more. The list you give above has a tremendous range in boat types and build qualities from Alden and Oyster to Pearson and Morgan. From heavy and slow to very fast. In this approach, you will miss some outstanding boats like HR and Wauquiez. Expressing some of your most basic desires, decided upon independently (like quality of the joinery or speed), will knock out some boats on your list above.

I might suggest you think about and answer such things for yourself as:

Budget
size
displ
build quality
cabin layout (two private staterooms or one, aft centerline queen berth or aft qtr cabin for a good sea berth)
hull (cored or solid)
LWL
PHRF
Angle of vanishing stability
Bal/displ ratio

etc etc

You might want to add Allied to your list, the 36 and 39 are good offshore boats.

When do you want to start sailing? What is your budget? What does your other half need? I think with more indebt analysis "pun intended" we can all help you narrow your list to the point where you can actually sail away.

Carpe Diem is for sale. It is a 1991 Caliber 38 which has been totally refited and converted into a long range cruiser in 2000.Full electronics package, liferaft, dinghy etc... It is in mint condition, offshore proven and ready. Divorce sale.

All of these are proven bluewater cruisers.

I was especially impressed by the Saga. That boat is solid, well outfitted for cruising, and _fast_. Did a test run here in Puget Sound, 12-15 kt. SW''erlies. Maxed out at 8.5kt upwind, 8kt broad-reach.

Very impressive. Expensive, yes - but impressive.
