Looking for Fixer upper Cruising Sailboat

If anyone comes across an abandoned boat or someone who is giving up on major boat refit please contact me.
The intended purpose for this boat would be for extended blue water
cruising. Ideally I would like to find a full keel or modern nearly full
keel like a Pacific Seacraft with an enclosed aperture for the propeller.
While I''m dreaming...it would be with a fairly good reputation of a solid
sea worthiness, strong hull integrity & heavy displacement. I would hope
to find such a boat that needs a major refit...new motor, mast, rigging & full replacement of the interior & wiring, perhaps with a gapping hole in the hull, priced well under $10K.
Please forward this to anyone who might have a decent cruising sailboat 40'' to 50'' for sale cheap.

Try walking the docks and yards in Marina Del Rey.There are sometimes boats that people gave up on or ran out of money trying to fix.

try the publication "Soundings" and/or online at Soundingsonline.com or www.yachtworld.com . Search boatyards is another option as is insurance autions, ebay, etc.

Searching boatyards near you is probably the best bet as suspect that you will have to work on her where she is before you can move her to a more convenient location. They are out there - and although you can save much $ by doing yourself - be prepared for some expensive parts and have a lot of time available. There may be a good reason that the boat was abandoned. It is very easy to put more money into a hulk than it will ever be worth. You might also look for slightly more expensive boats with less expensive fixes.
Also realize a variety of skills may be needed from carpentry to mechanic to rigger to fiberglassing.

I''m also looking for a project boat, but in the 26-30'' range for under $5000. I''ve been shopping most of the places mentioned and there are plenty of boats that would fit the bill but a lot of them are long way from me. I need to find one on the Gulf Coast,MS,LA,AL,No.FL,Lake Pontchartrain,etc.

Be careful of project boats. I met a man with a hurricane boat that he got real cheap. The mast was laying on the deck covered with blue tarps and assorted trash. I almost fell off the dock when he told me that he had been working on the boat almost every weekend for five years!!!!! I think that unless you just enjoy sniffing fiberglass most of us would be better off getting a second job or working overtime and saving the money to buy a boat. He was tied to a dock so with 5 years at 100+/month that''s $6000.00 in slip fees!!!! After five years the diesel was probably in poor condition. I didn''t have the heart to ask what he paid for his great deal.

Walk the docks and also the yard for boats that have been up on jackstands or blocked up. Look at the state registration sticker. If its years out of date, thats a good indication. Then see the marina office about contacting the boat owner. Often these marinas are more then willing to help make a yard eyesore go away.

Another good indicator for boats in the slip is a good crop of barnacles at the water line. You know that the boat at least floats and is probably not being used (if not a live aboard) .

Dream ON!!! To end up with a good,seaworthy boat, with the minimum of necessary gear, you are looking at a minimum of $50,000 it can be in sweat labor,dockage or shipyard fees or basic parts. Dreams have a way of changing. Wait until you are ready to go!!
Buy someone''s that has do it and is ready to go because there plans have changed!!
