Buying a Sabre 38

After much agonizing and spousal negotiation, I have signed a purchase agreement for a 1988 Sabre 38 MKII- K/CB with a 33hp Westerbeke- fresh water boat based in the Great Lakes (other finalist was a Tartan 37). Are there any mfr. or model specific issues I should be aware of as we do the survey? Also, would like to hook up with other Sabre owners for sabre specific advice. thank you.

jlubimir,
Make sure you don''t have to make a turn to starboard to get into your slip.
My best friend had one(just sold it last year)he loved it and so did I.You will too. You''ll see.

I know the prop is offset- is this a problem ?? I am "stuck" with a predominantly downwind apporach, a turn to stbd and docking on port side. I may consider backing upwind into the slip when it is extremely windy.

jlubimir,
Is it possible for you to move to a slip to where you''d have a turn to port to enter your slip?
Backing into your slip is an option. She does steer well in reverse.

This is not a problem if you learn its characteristics. The boat’s behavior when backing down is not noticeably different from any other boat without an offset prop. Sabres have offset props to eliminate prop wash over the rudder and so that the auxiliary engine can be mounted almost level in the boat. When mounting the engine nearly horizontal, the propeller is much more efficient compared to one that is canted downward 15 degrees. I still have the original 2 blade fixed prop and have no problems. You want some cheese and crackers to go with that WHINE!
