Bristol 34 ?

Does any one know anything about this boat, how well do they sail? Bristol Quality at this time of construction (1970? to 1979?) general information would be most helpful.

Thanks bosailor

Bristol 34 ?

Not one responce?

Does no one know anything about this design or builder?

I''m looking to rebuild one that has been out of the water for the past 10 years or so, she needs lots of work but has nice lines which has me interested. This is what I know at this time.
Designed by Halsey Herreshoff
Perf of about 168
Loa 34''-3" LwL 26''-0"
Beam 10''-5" Draft 5''-6"
Displacement 11,500lbs Ballest 6000lbs Mast length 48'' and sail area 529sq ft.

which reads to me that the boat would be stiffer and a little faster than a Catalina 30. and that the boats were generally well built.

Look forward to hearing comments?

Bristol 34 ?

How much work does she need? Is the motor in ok shape? In short I have more questions than I could ever think in the way of answers. All I know about the Bristol is what I have heard. And that is the are one fine boat. Good luck with the project..

Bristol 34 ?

I am not a big fan of the early Bristols for a lot of reasons that really do not apply to this model. In the early 1970''s Bristol tooled up a whole line designed by Halsey Herreshoff and the 34 is one of those. These boats, while the early ones were not all that well built (pretty much on a par with Pearsons and Columbias of that era), were really excellent sailing boats that when typically sold in good shape in the mid-$20k range offered a lot of boat for the money.

Where are you sailing? 500 some square feet does not sound like a lot of sail area for a boat this size in a light-air area.

Addtl info, for comparison: Sabre 34: PHRF approx 153. SA 507sq'', disp. 10300 lbs. C&C 35 III: PHRF approx 114. SA 571sq'', disp. 10,800. Tartan 34 (70''s version) PHRF
approx 150; Tartan 34 II PHRF approx 135. SA 536sq'', disp. 11,000 lbs. It looks like the Bristol is a heavy boat. If you''ve got heavy breezes, it could work.

Bristol 34 ?

Fin keel, spade rudder version? Built much better than Columbias of similar vintage. The Columbias invariably had terrible print-through in the hull layups and a high variation in build quality. I can usually identify a Columbia because I can see the roving through the paint, particularly in a dark boat. The Pearson brothers split circa 1966, one stayed with the buyer of Pearson, Grumman Aircraft, the other started Bristol Yachts. I guess I can''t say that overall there''s a huge difference in build quality in those years, but I went with Bristol. Again, and again, and again, if you like the boat, the hull is good, and it''s what you can afford, it''s up to you. Go sailing. Wait around too long and you''ll wind up with nothing. Calculate rebuild expenses carefully. Start with floating/sinking, go to locomotion, then instrumentation/electronics, then safety gear, then comforts. The Bristol 34 is the large end of the lighter-build Bristol line. I''ve noticed the rigging is less beefy, hull layup a little thinner and odds and ends of trappings less substantial than the 35''s, 39''s and 40''s. There''s a world of boats out there. Nothing wrong with kicking some gelcoat. I think the PHRF on my Bristol Alden 35 is something like 185 or 189 or some such. Dog downwind, when I''m used to clicking 10kn in a frac rig 39, but comfortable. The Columbias are NOT comparable in any respect of the word, as evidenced by the selling prices. Bristols began surpassing Pearson in build quality circa late ''70''s. 2cents.

Thanks for your responces, I figured that this boat had little to no hope of staying with a C&C 35 Mk1 or any other C&C 35 of that time. Other boats also carry more sail and are lighter which would suggest that thay would also be faster! But that is why Perf was created? to make slow boat equal to fast boats over a equal distance. and since our perf racing fleet is all over the place 225 to 90 this boat will fit in nicely, after a two year rebuild.
Bosailor.
