Transportion costs East to West coast

Does any know of the cost and logistics of transporting a 38-42’ sailboat long distance. I’m living in California and looking for such boat sized boat ~ 15 years old, but I like to extend my search to a bigger area. Also, California gets all-year usage, and boats from colder climates get perhaps less wear. Lastly, when comparing prices on boat advertised on-line, West Coast boats seems a tad more expensive than East Coast.

Wow! I actually have something to contribute!

I had my 35'' boat shipped from Newport, RI to Deale, MD, and the cost was right at $1200. You will obviously be looking at several times that figure. Do a search on the net on "boat shipping" and you will get many shippers, many shipping agents and many advice columns on how to go about it. Once I found the right one (I used an agent, and it worked out well) I didn''t have to do anything other than fill out the papers and wait. Estimates ranged from $1000 to $2200. You have to be able to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I paid about $3/mile to move my boat in the springtime from Baltimore to Newport. Transportation cost vary widely based on the load (your length of boat will, most likely, be "oversized" and need special permits) and time of year. The longer haul may help you to get a lower cost per mile. I would call a transport company and have them quote you on a boat that is similar to the ones you are thinking of buying.

It will also vary if you can piggy back off another delivery to an area. I just got a contract to bring my aloha 32 up from miami to north carolina for under $1k because of that. The fee is normally twice that amount. My broker was instrumental in putting all of that together. Find a good broker that works nationally rather then regionally and it will take much of the workload off of you.

if you are in S. CA, perhaps you could set it up so that your boat would be the back-haul for one of the Caltalina haulers. That would save them from dead heading back (empty).

Catalina operates out of the San Fernando Valley.

Have you considered using a delivery captain? The use of one of these professionals might cost less than hauling.
