US yachts- any good?

My wife and I grew up sailing but could never afford a boat ''til now. . .

I came across a ''83, 25'' us yacht at the marina (fresh water)while looking at a catalina. The boat has great curb appeal so I took a look. The teak has been re done in cabin and bottom done last June.

Boat is in great condition but I am not sure because I can not fine much info. My concern is finding parts ect. If the boat had a name of the top three I would have already bought it.

Can anyone shed light on this boat

I bought an ''83 US Yachts 25'' almost exactly one year ago. Although I''ve sailed a bit in the past this is the first time I''ve owned a boat so I don''t have much to compare it to. Still, I''ve found it to be a terrific boat. Sails very well into the wind and reaching. Not bad on a run downwind.

The only real problem I have with it is the outboard rig. In order to reach the throttle controls you really have to reach, I mean lean right out over the transom, which means you''re facing the wrong way. I''ve never experienced the leaky window problem some other U.S. owners complain about.

I''ve heard this boat maligned in a few places on the web, but I can''t figure out why. In my one year of ownership I''ve sailed all around British Columbia''s Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast, been out in moderate wind (25 knots)and found it to be a very nice ride under a reefed main and working jib. There are some places around here with nasty rip tides that can send up short, steep seas under certain conditions, and my U.S. 25 handles them all smartly.

There are two others tied up at my marina and the owners are happy with theirs as well.

As for finding spare parts etc. I can''t say how hard it will be. I haven''t had to go looking yet.

By the way, you''re right about the curb appeal. The U.S. 25 has nice lines, and a fantastic cabin for a 25 footer. Talk about a comfy sleep. I''ve been nothing but happy with this boat.

My first sailboat was a US Yachts 25 too. I loved sailing that boat. It was a safe fast and fun to sail first boat. Leaning over the transom to lift the outboard was a headache, so I added a pulley to help with the lifting. You may already have received the info you need, but I''ll add what I can: US Yachts were made by Bayliner - the powerboat company. They tried two attempts at sailboats: Buccaneer and US Yachts. While I haven''t sailed either, the USY''s look much better and seem to have a slightly better approval rating from on-liners. After the company gave up sail sales, they sold the molds. The USY 27 mold was bought by Pearson (as maybe was the 25) and they called it the Pearson Triton. Now Pearson had a Triton back in the day which is considered a great boat...the new Triton''s not so much so. Hope some or all of this helps.

I am also looking at a US Yachts sailboat. It is a 1982 32'' sloop. Any info would be great!
