I''d say the odds of a major problem above decks equals the odds for problems below deck, with the engine, with the electronics or with the hull, i.e. the opportunity for major problems exists through the boat.
A 35 foot boat is about twice as big a a 27 - if this is your first boat, my advice is to get real about you intentions and expectations. Buy a 27 footer, you can get a nice one for $20k, use it for a year or two around home, and then set some plans for what next when you know a bit about what is what.
