Catalina 27 for Baja cruise?

Hi,
I would like to buy my first sail boat. I would like to sail SF bay and eventialy explore Mexico. Is the Catalina 27 a good boat for day sailing down Baja for 2 people (for a few monthes)? Or would you go with more of a cruising boat? Keep in mind that I''m a student on a limited very budget.

The LE model of the Catalina 270 ( 1993 and up ) has Water heater, stern pulpit seats, and shower in cockpit which add considerably to comfort if you decide to go this route. Icebox (no refrigeration), & water tank are on small side for long term use and many people supplement these for longer voyages. Hot water from a tap is a kind of "breaking point" for me, if I can easily wash up for at least a short time after motor has been running I feel more civilized. I would suggest you formulate your own list of must-haves, a slightly older boat in 30 to 34 foot range may have systems you want and meet budgetary requirements.
