UK Tape Drive Sails

I need a new main for my Mirage 24. Does anyone have experience with UK tape drive sails? I want go fast! I spoke with a racer today who spoke well of them with a big smile on his face. I'd like your input before calling the UK rep back later this week.

Without hijacking the thread, I'd be interested also in understanding this forum's views on the cost/benefit of the silver v. carbon tape drive sails from UK.

I have a Tape Drive main on my C&C 35/3. I love it, but it is the first composite main I have ever owned. I have no idea what a new one would cost and hope I don't have to find out for several years.

I've used tape drives on a C&C 115 and were surprised at how long they lasted. Shape was pretty good after years of racing and cruising. I think they're good sails just need to be able to justify the cost.

Silver
Fiberglass or polyester fibers. I get the impression it's cheaper. I would be concerned with flex fatigue. Looks like UV isn't an issue. Heavier than all aramids

Carbon
Lighter, stronger, impervious to UV. Flex fatigue sucks, stretch is almost non existant. It's much more expensive I would assum.

I have no personal experience with either. Just their aramid tape drives. What boat do you have and what are your goals?

Zz4gta - We have a modern assymetrical racer-cruiser. We beer can, do a regatta, and do a couple of long distance races each year. We'we not competitive but improving steadily. For our boat, there is there is about an $800 difference between silver and carbon.

Re: UK Tape Drive Sails

That is a big difference for a 24 footer. I know my Merit Quantum sails are fusion M string sails. The strings are technora and they're holding up really well. The #1 I got in the middle of 2009 and it's still a good sail. Couple holes in it now, but nothing serious. The main is the same technology, main was about 2k and the jib was 1800 or 1900?

I didn't like how carbon holds up over time. It's a great fiber but breaks down when flexing. It's extremely light but with my crew, sometimes the jib gets stuffed into the forehatch instead of being flaked (when racing), and that's something carbon won't enjoy. I liked the durrability of technora better. For boats our size, stretch isn't a huge concern.

In the end it's your decision. I also requested that my main and jib be made with slightly more fibers (dpi) in it than what the designers spec'd. This does add a little weight, but for distance racing I believe it has helped keep my sails in better order. I feel like North tries to make the lightest and fastest sails possible without much thought to longetivity. They’re super fast sails…….for 2 years. ;) 3DLs used to be called 3 Days Long for a reason. :p

My racing consists of bouy stuff, overnights, 50-70 and 120+nm down the bay races. I don't really bother with the club level racing.

Re: UK Tape Drive Sails

With a furler I would not use Carbon.

The price seems about right. Are you saying the silver option is $800 above those?

Re: UK Tape Drive Sails

Quotes are for glass fiber threads. Carbon was not recommended. I don't particularly want to care for carbon fiber or aramid. I don't know about the silver option. UK is sending cloth samples.
