C&C 26 Spinnaker halyard
I have to replace a missing Spinnaker halyard. With no guide rope to help I 'm looking for advise. I'm thinking about talking the top off to make life easier. Looks like its held with three bolts. Tried to remove it but found it appears to be cocked in place (some sort of white rubber substance).Did not want to force it off to find out it was a mistake. Anybody done this before? Any help would be appreciated.

You are making this too complicated. You do not need an internal halyard for the spinnaker; an external halyard is fine.

Step 1. Make your way to the top of the mast. There should be a bail at the top forward end of the mast, outside the forestay connection. (If not, add one.)

Step 2. Attach block to bail at top of mast. (Whoops, forgot to bring tools, block, attachment and halyard with you? Descend mast, retrieve and re-climb mast.)

Step 3. Run halyard through block. Descend mast with both ends of halyard attached securely to you.

Step 4. Tie one end of halyard to bail of single-swivel snap shackle (if not using pre-spliced halyard). Clip snap shackle on spinnaker pole bail on mast for storage when not in use.

Step 5. Attach additional cleat to mast below and forward of cleat for jib halyard. Run other end of halyard through cleat, tie stopper knot so you do not have to climb mast again. Cleat halyard.

Voila', you have a spinnaker halyard. Now, go out and broach that boat!

Thanks James I thought of that but I want to keep the boat stock. I hope to get info on removing the top plate and working like that.

So you had an internal halyard and it's run out?

You'll need a good bosuns' chair, small twine/string and about 6 inches of bicycle chain. Get yourself or someone else up to the masthead in the chair, tie the string to the bicycle chain piece and feed it over the halyard block and into the mast slot.. Have someone at the bottom exit slot with a good flashlight and a wire hook of some sort. When the chain piece gets in the area of the slot he'll hear it and can snag the string.. pull it through, attache the new halyard securely and pull that through.. voila there you go.

The spinn halyard probably did not have anything to do with the masthead assembly other than the crane for the block.. .. it should be out on the crane and then re-enter the mast a foot of so down from the top, so pulling the cap wouldn't help much.
