Aluminum is a way more forgiving and can be worked on without compromising it's structure. Carbon fibre is stronger pound for pound but it will snap without any warning.
For all around general use I would go with the aluminum mast.
C&C/Tartan have had serious problems with there new carbon masts and hulls and in my opinion they are just not worth it.
