c&c 33mk ii vs c&c 34(1980/81) vs c&c 35 mk iii

Hello all. I am new to this group so I hope I am posting to an approprate group. I am interested in buying either a c&c 33 mk ii, or a mid 80's c&c 34, or a mid 80's c&c 33 mkiii. I am mostly a cruiser these days but there is enough racer in me to want a boat that performs well on the race course as well. My question to the group is: Which of the three above boats would you suggest would best suit my needs? It has been suggested to me that the c&c 33 mkii sails very well due to its low freeboard/low centre of effort. I have also heard that the c&c 35 mkiii sails VERY well upwind. Why is the c&c 34 PHRF higher than the 33 or 35? Is it slower? What about the interior volume of the 33 vs the 35? Which is better for cruising? Any caveats I should know about these boats? Hope I am not asking a question that has been answered a million times. If so, please point me in the right direction.

I've got a 35 Mk III but I can't give you much of a comparison. Check out C&C Yachts - C&C Photo Album & Resource Center. There is a great listserve of c&c owners. The 35/3 came in keel and centerboard versions. Mine is a keel model. Chef2sail has a c/b version. Both make great racer/cruisers. The Vee berth is very long, huge ice box, nice nav table and sails great! It will outsail almost any cruiser. Joel

Take a close look at the mast step on the 33. They are known for collapsing. The enterprising fella in the shots below solved the problem by welding 2" to the bottom of the mast. It was cheaper than fixing the grid, keel sump and refitting the keel.

Our previous boat (not C&C) looked the same from aft... ie the rudder and keel were not perfectly 'in line'.. it seemed not to affect performance in any serious way.. after all it's not as if the fins are often perfectly plumb anyway...

Not sure if that was intentional on C&C's part (in BPs image), but when the time came to install a dripless seal (necessitating pulling the [long] propshaft), once the coupling was off the shaft slid nicely alongside the off-plumb rudder blade without needing to drop the rudder (a big job on a 40 footer. esp since the stock went clear to the aft deck) At that point I decided the offset must have been intentional... worked out for us, anyhow...

The keel in that photo could be wiggled side to side about 4" due to the collapsing mast step (grid). C&C did some offset shafts, they never did offset keels or rudders.

Of the three boats the 35 MKIII is the best racer cruiser and the most comfortable. Goes extrely well to windward and is a high pointer, especially with a CB. Is a stiff bopat due to balsa core in deck and also is a bit tender tilll you figure them out.

Our 35 is a confortable cruiser we take to NE and Long Island every year from the Chessie. It handles well in 6-10 ft ocean swells. Good cockpit and lines of sight.

I sail on a 33Mkll, shoal keel, registered as Mumm's. We race and daysail it, without having any boat integrity issues, resulting in low maintenance costs. This model has kept a good resale value.
