Mainsail reefing

Hi guys. Our 29 mkI has two reefing lines that run inside the boom and out the bottom at the mast. If it came out the top or side of the boom it would make some sense. Help please.

Re: Mainsail reefing

It's difficult to picture lines that run through the boom and exiting the mast as the two are only mechanically connected. I recommend you find an experienced local sailor to go through your sail controls and explain them to you

Re: Mainsail reefing

There may/should be some cam cleats and levers where the lines exit the boom to 'jam' the lines once you've tucked the reef in.. our Selden boom is set up that way.

If there are no cleats there, nor cleats nearby on the boom or on the mast then they must be intended to run down to turning blocks on the deck and aft from there to the cockpit.

On one of our previous boats it was set up similarly, we added a small winch on the underside of the boom to aid in tensioning the clew reef line. It worked well.

Re: Mainsail reefing

They are intended to run down to the turning blocks and into the cockpit.

You should have one/ two rope clutches for easy reefing.

I will try and explain. Lines are led from the luff grommets which become the foot clew at each reef point through the end of the boom to the mast end of the boom to the turning blocks back into the cockpit through the clutches.

You should have a dedicated winch ( or sometimes the main sheet winch) on the port side which pulls in the reef line.

Its as simple as dropping the main halyard to the sail tack point, attaching the reef tack ring to the reef horn at the mast, tensioning the halyard , pulling in the reefing line attached to the reef clue on the luff. Make sure you do it in the proper order or you could rip the sail.

Practice this at the dock in calm winds.

Re: Mainsail reefing

Thanks Chef and everyone else. That's the way I ended up rigging them. I was hoping that I was missing something that would run the reefing line through the tack of the sail so I would not have to go forward to do it. Wishful thinking. Thanks Rod
