Scupper and drainage

Hey everyone,

So I live in the great NW and right we are seeing about an inch of rain per day. I've noticed my scuppers are a bit clogged and now I'm getting standing water in the cockpit. I'm also quite sure the bilge (which others have said uses a float to push water out automatically) is not performing its job. My question is:

How can I gain access to the lowest area of the hull and really guage what the water is like down there? Also, does anyone have a proper cutaway image of the C22 to give me a better understanding of just where everything goes down there?

I do have the sink along the starbrd side with the sink drainage meeting the scupper tubes where the keel crank is.

The lowest spot should be right under the step inside the cabin.... just lift the lid and take a peek.

As to the drains: There should be a valve on the line leading from the sink drain so that you can shut that line off to prevent water from filling the boat if something else plugs, or if that drain goes lower than the surface of the water when heeled. I've also seen a valve on the lower portion of the "Y" to keep the scuppers from making a "woop" sound while underway.

Since the scupper tubing has a small inside diameter, it can and will plug easily. I keep a small piece of wire handy for unplugging, and I like to blow them out on occasion. The screens help keep gunk out of the lines. If you have access, a turkey baster jammed into the scupper tubes works well to blow them out.

There is a bit of water in there but it looks as if the scupper tubes drain somewhere below that step area. Are you sure thats as low as it drains?if so I'm much better off than I thought. I was afraid the hullwas full and it was overflowing into the cockpit.

If you go to this page, and scroll down to the battery article, there is a good picture of the compartment where the winch cable, and scupper through hulls are. This is also about the lowest part of the boat when she's in the water so if this is dry then you have drain hose issues.

Don't forget that water can overflow from the cockpit into the cabin.

The only place I've found that water doesn't drain from is under the forward port dinette seat, and the compartment under the port cockpit lazarette.
