A-Frame

My mast snapped a couple days ago due to a bad turnbuckle. I am looking at buying a mast that is a bit taller, 29'. I have some repair to do to the step, and plate. Will it be alright to modify the step if needed? Also, when stepping the new mast what doest the A-frame pivot on?

Thanks.
