c30TR with perkins M30 idle

I have a new to me 1980 catalina 30 TR with a perkins 30hp engine and tyring to figure out what the idle should be. the mid setting on the throttle is about 1200rpm and that is what the PO used as idle. It goes lower though and the surveyer said it should be quite low. When under 1200rpm the charging warning light comes on though (boat has 4 batteries and large alternator).

I'm not liking having to coast a lot when docking as at 1200rmp its doing over 3knts. I have to shift in and out of gear to come in slow.

thanks much for any inpute
