Smile Catalina 30 Rudder

I am looking for a rudder for my 1988 Catalina 30. Does anyone have a used rudder in good shape?

Hi,

You might try posting on the Catalina 30 Yahoo email list. Very active and if no one has one, I'm sure someone could give you some idea where to find one.

Mine is used, but fortunately still attached to the boat.

CalebD will become famous soon enough
Catalina Direct has them: Catalina Direct: Rudder C-30 HDPE Type "A" or "B"

If you don't like their prices what about making your own from scratch?

Try contacting Catalina directly. They do repairs on rudders and may be able to provide you with a new rudder.

Re: Catalina 30 Rudder

Cannot say enough about Foss Foam. I had ordered a new Rudder from them when I purchased my used 1989 Catalina 30 several years back. During the survey I was told the rudder was delaminated and should be replaced. I was stuck at a yard that would not allow me to do my own work. I ordered the new Rudder from Foss (they did allow me to order my own parts) and they measured, cut, drilled and installed. It was a mess. The wheel was difficult if not impossible to turn. I had to leave the marina and return to my home port. I went back to complain and they claimed the Rudder Shaft was bent and they did the best they could. I contacted Foss and they said to return the Rudder to them at the end of the season. They even sent call tags so the freight was free. They shipped out a brand new Rudder at no charge not even for freight. I had a Machine Shop cut and drill the hole for the Radial Drive Wheel. It worked perfectly. About three weeks later the owner contacted me to say that the returned Rudder was perfect. The yard simply either measured wrong or drilled the holes in the wrong location causing the Radial Drive Wheel to bind.

This is the type of service that builds a loyal following.

Re: Catalina 30 Rudder

How about my elliprical rudder? Benefits include: backs easily to port or starboard, point higher / more lift lift from a NACA 012 hydrofoil cross-section, lighter helm... especially while motoring, turn in a tighter radius. Built better than OEM quality materials.... including an all stainless shaft and web. Competitively priced too.

I used to work at the Catalina factory here in Californoa and just put a big ad in Mainsheet magazine to show this rudder off. Oh and if you really want a rudder from Foss, you can buy it through me. I'm a reseller for both builders (FL or CA). Inbox me at catalinaoutfitters.com
