Cal 30 Wire Rope Replacement

My boat has (what I think is) the original all-wire main halyard with a winch on the starboard side of the mast.

It appears that the halyard is routed up inside the mast and exits on the starboard side of the mast bottom and then goes up to the huge winch.

I don't have a convenient way of bringing the mast down right now but want to go to a standard all rope halyard.

Has anyone does this on a Cal without changing the masthead sheave? If the sheave will accomodate the line halyard, I'd assume I could go to 7/16"?

Thanks.
