Cal 21 Refit

Hello all I have recently acquired a gutted Cal 21. I am planning to rebuild her on weekends when i'm home from college. I was able to trade for her in exchange for a Flying Junior that I had refinished. I plan to post updates and pictures of the rebuild her along with questions for those more knowledgeable then my self.

On that note could any Cal 21 owners post detailed pictures of the area surrounding the compression post and how it is attached to the top of the swing keel trunk?

Can't wait to join the community.

Re: Cal 21 Refit

Sailorboy 15,

Welcome. I have a CAL 21 and I'm starting to fix it up. I've got the two quarter berths removed because they were rotted from leaking side lights.

Have you done anything to yours, yet?

Re: Cal 21 Refit

Well this is a kinda old thread but since it is about my boat I figured this is the place to put some information about how my project is going.
When I got the boat it had absolutely no interior over the winter in fit new structural bulkheads and am nearly done the support for the compression post. Unfortunately I have no pictures of this part of the project as I didn't have a smart phone yet.

When I was first looking at the boat I noticed that the keel was weeping rust so I knew I would have to address it before I put her in the water.

Here are a few pictures of what I found

It looks as if water intruded at the locking pin and as the rust expanded the keel cracked.

Any suggestions on how to avoid having exposed steel in the pivot and the locking pin hole when I put her back together?

Re: Cal 21 Refit

Looks like you are making good progress.

I still have to drop the swing keel in my boat. Have it gutted and took the deck/cabin top off the hull to make it easier to sand and rebuild the inside.

Re: Cal 21 Refit

I was just looking through your thread it looks like you are really making progress. Are you planning to put a factory interior in it or are you planning some modifications? I am changing mine up a bit. I am doing away with counter space and extending the V berth since at 6'4" I need the extra space

Re: Cal 21 Refit

Probably go with the factory interior and perhaps some minor modifications. I plan on installing the 3/4" bulkheads forward and aft of the swing keel trunk and then frame in the V-Berth. Not sure how I will frame in the quarter berths.

I want to put a gas tank locker in the cockpit. Should be a little easier with the cockpit/deck/cabin removed from the hull.

This weekend I will use some 1" X 6" planks to brace the top of the hull in the correct width to make working on her a little easier.

I built a frame similar to yours but I still need to modify it before I lift it off the trailer. Ultimate plan is to raise it high enough to drop the swing keel out of the boat and complete some badly needed preservation work.

Have you painted the inside of your hull? Did you use any bilge paint on the deck between the quarter berth and the swing keel trunk?
