Thanks. My furler track is made up of 4 metal pieces with the halyard running through it. other end of halyard is connected to a plastig "thingy" that runs back down the other side of the furler. The problem is actually the seams between the 4 pieces of metal. The sail hits a lot of friction at every seam especially further up.

I don't have lazy jacks (but have lazy children ). I read somewhere about someone using a big piece of bungee cord. Before I set out, i take of cover and sail ties and wrap sails with bungy cord that I can release easily from the cockpit. When taking down i just lock tiller tamer and use bungee to wrap quickly and then flake properly when i get back to dock.

I sale off of Playland/Rye/Mamaroneck/New Rochelle area in LI sound.

HIX,

Someone else in this forum has mentioned a similar situation with the furler track. Others have mentioned that it's not the greatest design. Mine only hangs on one section and fortunately it is the lowest section. It's probably just a matter of age and abuse....and me getting lucky that mine is not too bad. I can always manage it without much of a problem. I do recall a post somewhere that suggest replacing the furler if financially capable.

Is that what you were lubricating? Make sure you use something that will not attract dirt....it could get worse.

Ron

I don't have Lazy Jacks. I just bought my Cal 22 and it came with J22 sails, and we were having a hard time with the main, but I decided to put sail slides on and things are much better now. Before I needed two people to raise the main and it was a mess. Mine no longer has a roller furling, so I am no help there.
As for the boat, it sails great and my first in and out of the slip went perfectly, but I had another hand on deck.

I sail out of Westbrook, CT, so a bit far from you Hix.

I am so envious of you guys....I would love to have my little Cal on sailing grounds like where you live. I chartered a 25ft hunter out of Mystic for a day sail a couple of years ago. Fishers Island Sound. Sailed over to Stonington, tied off on the pier and had lunch, then back. Great sailing. Great day! We took the ferry out to Block Island too. Very nice area up there.

Traveler controls for Cal 22

I'm interested in putting controls on the existing traveler. Seajoe - you mentioned doing that. Do you remember which parts you bought and where you got them? Or would like to sell your old parts if you still have them?

Has anyone else fit controls onto the existing traveler and could give me part numbers or links to a site?

All the best,

Bill

Bill,

RigRite has some info regarding your question. This is the website. I have not spoken to them, but I think they have the necessary parts to improve the existing traveler. It you do this conversion please post some photos and let us know how it goes. I think numerous Cal 22 owners, including myself are interested in traveller update/improvement.

Thanks, Ron. I'll check that out. And if I move on it, I'll definitely post something.

What boat do you dream of next?

I've been enjoying my Cal 22 in the Boston area. My wife and I have done some overnight cruises to Salem, Manchester, and Gloucester. Plus some overnights in the Boston Harbor Islands. I'm consistently impressed with how well the boat sails.

However, we're looking for something bigger now. Just need a little more room. The Ericson 25+ looks like a nice sailing fractionally rigged boat that should sail well and give us more room without too much extra expense. What else have all of you been lusting after for the next boat?

BTW, if you know of anyone looking for a very clean Cal 22, let me know.

Bill

winter cover

Not sure real reason but opted for making a winter cover for my Cal22 from ShipShape Products Inc - Boat and Marine Canvas and Upholstery

Maybe felt a little green or actually in need of a boat project. Spent better part of 5-6 hours last week making a "pattern" for my boat and sent off to the manufacturer and hopefully in a few weeks will have something that fits. Here are a bunch of images (and a movie) below that i needed to create for the manufacturer. Good news is that these guys will have an off the shelf cover for the Cal 22 if you want one too.
