I owned a 1980 aft head version for several years in the late nineties. She is easy to sail and handles well even in very boisterious conditions. The previous owners spent two years sailing from the Seattle area to Mexico and back. I felt good enough about the boat to offer it to my brother on the condition I could use her when I visited the Bay Area to visit family. He and his wife still sail her on SF Bay. I delivered the boat to them from Portland, OR in a trip with ugly winds and seas. She did everything we asked of her without skipping a beat. A friend of mine who visited me recently inquired about the boat and lamented he wished he had bought her when I had offered her to him.

They are noted for their strong lay up and quality gel coat. The V berth and aft head was more comfortable for my wife and I than the Nordic 40SE which was her replacement.

Like all boats of this age maintenance and condition are key. I think one that's been taken care of is a worthy candidate for upgrading and showering with presents.

A couple from Seattle did a circumnavigation on their CAL 35 and posted their log on the internet and it may still be there. It would be worth looking up and reading. If I remember right it was published on the Seattle Yacht Club web page.
