Cal 2-29 shift cable

Just got my Cal 2-29 back in the water after a long winter on the hard, spent sanding, painting, cleaning, waxing. It still amazes me that after 6 months of inactivity the old Farymann kicks over within seconds of ignition! Untied the lines to make the 3 mile jaunt from dry dock back to my marina when the shift cable broke right at the shift lever. I had no trouble finding a replacement cable at my favorite boat shop but replacing the broken cable has been a headache. The shift cable seems to be attached to the throttle cable, both of which are fastened within the pedestal. Any advice on how to remove and replace the shift cable? Does this require removal of the pedestal?

Mine is a '75 Cal 2-29 and as far as I know, the gear/throttle installation were standard. The levers are mounted on the stbd lazarette below the cover hatch, so you have to reach down a bit to operate them. Yours may be a modification taking them to the pedestal for easy reach. Having said that, the 'standard' set up has two separate cables - one trans, one throttle. removing and replacing is no problem. When you say 'attached' do you mean they are just bound together? If so detach both at both ends, tie on a messenger line, pull all through, make repairs, re-thread with messenger line - should work.
That is the way I replaced the original set up with the more handy pedestal mounted levers.
