Cal 28-2 - Owners Group

I'm a new owner of a 1987 Cal 28-2 and haven't been able to find much as far as an owners group for this model. I'm having her relocated from Lake Lanier outside Atlanta to Lake Norman, just north of Charlotte, NC.

Most of the posts I've found through Google are old and/or dead. eMail addresses are no longer good, links are dead, etc.

My new boat is the shoal draft version of the C-28. I'd be interested in any facts, opinions, or otherwise on the performance differences between the two. I haven't seen that there's any difference in either PHRF or Portsmouth ratings based on the draft. Not sure if that means that the shallow draft makes up for time on the downwind legs or if there just weren't enough made to justify a rating.

At any rate, I'd be interested in hearing from other owners of this model.

Don't know much about shoal draft version. Do you race yours? I'm racing mine this weekend in the PHRF New England Championships.

Have you ever rebedded the stanchions? Need ideas on how to do this since there's no access to stanchion bolts. Hole saw?

Chris - there's an access panel behind the setee cushions on my boat to get to the stanchions. I haven't looked at the plate but would think you'd be able to rebed them without having to take the stanchions loose. My last boat just had a stainless cover that went over and around the base where the bolt pierced the deck. I just had to unscrew that and lift it up, clean all the old sealant off, and rebed it. Hopefully it's that easy on the Cal.

I haven't raced her yet. Just got her this summer and had to wait until mid July to get the mast stepped and rigged up. Our fall series is starting next month so I'll be interested to see how she does on the upwind legs. Had her out two weeks ago and hit 7.0 on the knot meter on a broad reach - so she will get up and go off the wind.

Good luck in your race and on your maintenance.

The Cal 28-2 is a nice package, a smaller version of the 33 which was runnerup on my last buying list.

PHRFNE doesn't have a Cal 28 SD rating, but the allowance for the 33 SD is 6 seconds, and I bet it would be the same. Not too many folks race the SD versions of boats if they can get ahold of a deep keel as credit allowances like six seconds don't come close to the actual perfoamance loss...

PS - Chris, I'll look you up tomorrow night, I'm doing mainsheet on the Henderson 30 Wild Thing...
