What makes a boat a "Blue Water"

Aloha,
I am having a great time reading the different articles on this web site but I have a question about what a “Blue Water” sailboat is. Is it the size, the type of keel it has, type of rigging it has or how it is built? I am not ready to do any “blue water” sailing but you never know.

Usually it is the hull design, things such as cockpit size and location, displacement, and a full keel helps. This is a generalized description because there are tons of things that can make the perfect blue water boat.
