Cal 25-2 Rigging

Hi. I recently bought a 1978 Cal 25-2. She's in great shape and I've sailed her a few times on Lake Lanier (outside Atlanta) since buying her several weeks ago. She sails well.

I'd like to talk to other Cal 25-2 owners and swap some photos to compare/contrast the original standing rigging set-up with any updated versions folks may now have. For example, although my boat's cabin, electrical and head have all been updated, I think my boat is equipped pretty much as she was topsides, with the exception of a new bimini top, new lifelines and new rubrails. She has no topping lift and no boom vang and she has only a single winch on the mast which is located on the port side (is this for hoisting the jib and the mainsail? I've seen boats that have two winches on the mast). How was the mainsail reefed in the original configuration? Is it roller reefing? I'm going to practice reefing at the dock tomorrow morning.

Did boats this old and this size just not come equipped with a boom vang? BTW, I'm looking into getting a rigid vang from Garhauer to take care of the topping lift and boom vang deficiencies.

Thanks,

Thomas

Hi Thomas,

I, too, recently bought a 1978 Cal 2-25! I've had her since July of this year. Your boat sounds very similar to mine with the winch on the port side. But, I have a boom vang. However, I'm not sure if it was originally with the boat or the previous owner put it on. I'm the third owner of the boat.

I've recently had a problem with the spreader on my starboard side. I was hearing a pretty significant clanging sound when I was on a port tack the last time out. When got back to the marina, I found that my starboard spreader was very loose. I went up the mast today and determined that the loose spreader was angled down at about a -5 degree angle from the mast while the other spreader that is ok was angled up at about 5 degrees off the mast. Can you confirm for me that both spreaders should be angled off the mast or should they be perpendicular to the mast?

Thanks,

Brian

The spreader should bisect the angle the the shroud creates on the end.

Re: Cal 25-2 Rigging

Approx 6.3 Knots.
Easy enough to calculate using known specifications. LWL of Cal 25-II = 22 Feet.
Hull Speed = (Sq Rt / LWL) x 1.34
