New Cal-25 Owner

Greetings:

I have been reading Sailnet for a while and decided to join. I just acquired a 1972 Cal-25-1. She is presently on Eufaula Lake in Oklahoma. Structually she is in good shape but in need of new lines, headsail, rig adjustment and lots of cosmetic work.

If anyone has any advice I'd sure be open to it! Oh, I have yet to learn to sail, but making arrangements for that.

Good Luck with the new boat. Is it the flat top(deck) model with the transom cutout? Cals are great boats! Very solid and very forgiving to sail. Even for novice sailors. It'll teach you how to sail. Read the American Red Cross Basic Sailing book and get out there. Keep the wind coming over your shoulder and enjoy it. Be sure that your rigging is good enough for the sails that you're running and enjoy fixing it up.

Thank you for the good wishes! Yes, she is a flat top (flush deck). I've read everything I could get my hands on about the class....all seems very positive. I have found many helpful books, especially "This Old Boat." I also have a friend in Oklahoma City with a Columbia 24 who is walking me through things. His sailing advise was similar to yours...."Get out there. You'll spend an hour learning to sail and the rest of your life getting good at it!"

I'm doing some work on her. Rigging needs adjusted and the running lines all need to be replaced. Needs a headsail, too (I could use some advice on that). Actual sailing is on hold pending a new house 100 miles closer to where she's at. Plan to take her out under "iron Genoa" in a week or two for a shake down, though.

By the way, her name is "Wild Irish Rose." Long story, but I traded her for a 35' Owens cruiser. While the Owens was in dry dock it became a gathering place for local winos who left empty bottles of Wild Irish Rose wine. Well, I took that as a sign from the sea gods, and sailors don't tempt the sea gods!

Haha, funny about the name. Good one though. Be sure to get a pint of Wild Irish Rose and pour a dallup for the old man...Any jibs from a 25' or less boat will work temporarily and help balance the sailplan for better sailing. Good luck and have fun.

Hey sorry about the late post but I just found a good deal on a Cal 25 1972 i think it is, and wanted to know all about your experience so far on it. Do you have alot of cabin space? How high is the cabin? Thank you and happy sails!
