I just bought a Cal 21 and the previous owner completely remade the interior in 1/2" ply and it seems to work very well. Although, 5/8" may be best.

what about 3/8? too thin?
I can't remember what was in ours, it was so bad and rotten through and through.

is the wood attached to this? or the bare metal on the keel plug?

I wouldn't go any thinner than 1/2". I'll try and post pics of the keel plug I have. It was also remade by the previous owner, but works very well.

Original was 1/4' in mine. I was thinking doing the same but over epoxy with fiberglass. To better water resist and strenthen it too

Sorry it took me a little bit to get these posted. The plug is very basic with a bungee to connect to the deck plate and the hinge part connects to a stud via wing nut to hold it in place. The other pic is of the new interior. Also very basic, which I like a lot, great for camping. And I'm having problems posting pics, so here are the links:

I have started in cutting some wood. I'll post some pics soon. I still have to do a bit of work but hopefully she ll be ready soon. Anyone near Dana Point CA? looking for sailing buddies. Oh we got new radio a VHF650. Still need to locate a used main sail.
