Cal Owners
Hi all, I have to say, this is a very quiet group. Was hoping to hear what everyone has been up to during these past few cold months. Better than working, right? :) Fortunately, I have been able to knock out a few interior projects in between the freezing temps. I have tried to keep my blog up to date, but just a few of the highlights would be replacing all of the fire extinguishers, worked on the new fresh water system, replacing the depth sounder display and replaced the bulkhead compass. Thats just a few things...what have you all been up to?

Making some backing plates for my cleats, stanchions, railings, etc. Mainly just getting things ready to go when it gets just a tad warmer. I have to drop the mast, rewire, and add a 3 way and anchor light to the top.

Performed routine maintenance since returning from Mexico in July, 2009; varnish work, waxing and having three Halon extinguishers brought up to date. Rebuilt the transmission to the Yanmar auxiliary engine. Also boiled out the heat exchanger and replaced the mixing 'J' in the exhaust. Upgraded to a 100 amp alternator and replaced the ST4000 Plus autopilot with the SPX-5 model. Did an end-for-end change of both of my bow anchor rodes and used a rope to chain splice rather than an eye connection. Replaced all my dock lines and fitted each with full grain leather chaff guards. Hauled the boat in October for bottom paint, new prop shaft, new drip-less shaft seal, new cutlass bearing and re-bushing the rudder post.

Left San Diego November 2, 2010 and arrived in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico on November 10th. Plan to spend at least the next two cruising seasons in Mexico.

PSS Dripless

Trying to buy a PSS for my Cal 39 as well, and was not able to get to the shaft log due to the battery box being in the way (was not dressed appropriately at the time).

Not sure what the log size is. Imagine yours is the same with a 1 1/4 inch shaft. Do you know the size of the log, or do you remember which unit you bought? Should be a 2 1/2, but not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW, would you send the response to cstrasburger@gmail dot com...? Don't get here much....

New CAL 29 owner here
Just got a 76 CAL 29, right now she's on the hard, we'll need to do a good cleaning, re-bed the deck hardware, and paint the bottom. Survey didn't find much that needed attention, mostly just routine maintenance items. I've been going bow to stern, checking systems, learning thru hulls, etc. The Farryman has been rebuilt within the last few years, runs like a champ. Thanks to Tommays posting, I knew to check out the bottom beam, no sign of damage, looks very solid. The hull on these boats is amazing, solid, no sign of blisters. Can't wait to get her out on the bay this spring.
