Cal 29 prop shaft question

Hi all,

Is it possible to re & re the prop shaft from the out side without removing the rudder on a Cal 29-2?

Unfortunately, no. On the other han, it's not difficult to drop the rudder assuming you have the space under the yacht and you mark the quadrant/rudder post alignment.

We had a 1976 Cal 2-29 for 25 years. They are great boats.

I agree the Cal 29 is a great old boat and most of the people i speak to who have had one remember it fondly, many saying they wish they never sold it.

I am currently undertaking a re-powering project where I had planed to do the work in the water and then change the shaft once the new engine was installed limiting the time on the hard and giving me a larger window to get the job done.

Couldn't you pull it from inside the boat once the old engine is out and before you install the new engine?

Yes however I wanted to do the re & re in the water and I'm not brave enough to pull the shaft in the water even though i know many have done it.

You have to drop the rudder no big deal with a tiller a fair bit of PITA with a wheel OR do it when the motors out

IF it is blocked up the keel needs to be a good 11" off the ground OR you will be diging a hole

Thanks. I have wheel steering so I will do it with the engine out. And thank you for your blog. It is a wonderful resource to keep these old Cals alive. I hope to contribute as well with details on my re-power project. And if you ever find yourself on the west coast be sure to let us know.

fyi the rudder DOES NOT FLOAT...not even a little.
