adding outboard to Cal2-29

i'm preparing to add an outboard to a Cal 2-29 and looking for information about reinforcing the transom. Plan to attach a Garelick mount and a 15hp 4 stroke.

sailingfool will become famous soon enough
Bad idea, especially if the boat has an inboard. That sounds like an awful amount of weight to add off the stern of that boat. The hits against this configuration include:
1. unbalancing the boat
2. loss of prop wash control
3. prop popping out of rough water

If this boat has an inboard, I would expect that when you go to sell it, any buyer will still hit you with the cost of an inboard replacement, the outboard being lost money and junked

Outboard

Thanks for the response Sailingfool. The inboard is shot, so it's been removed. Replacing the inboard would cost more than the boat is worth. So it's an inboard or nada. I don't believe 120lbs at the stern should be a problem.

outboard, no problem

Howzit Jbradac,
We put a 9.9 honda 4 stroke longshaft (75 lbs)on our Cal27. Works like a charm. Original inboard was removed by previous owner. We used 1/2 inch ply to reinforce the transom and got the top-line Garrelick (eezy lift spring loaded model). In addition to that, we added 100# of sandbags in various holds to make up for the weight difference of the inboard. Made the boat a better, stiffer sailor and just as fast. I'd use a 15hp for the 29, as the displacement is about 3000# more than the 27. I'll look for a pic and post later. Good luck.
Leonard
p.s.- we just moved up to a 1979 CAL2/29 with a Faryman 12hp. 2 weeks in we're loving it. Much more boat and plenty headroom.

Just did the same

We just put an auxiliary mount on our Cal 29 for a 15HP Johnson. It did the job to get us out of a pinch when the main Atomic 4 decided to quit (as it has been known to do). Mounted a bracket from a Catalina 27 in the center of the transom with a backing plate. It has been a comforting addition, but as mentioned in a previous post, cavitation in choppy seas is definitely a concern. Best of luck.
