Diesel smell inside cabin

There were 2 pinholes in the inspection plate covering my diesel fuel tank under my galley sink. The holes allowed diesel to percolate into the space under the galley cabinet and pool above the subfloor. I mopped up all the fuel that I could see and used a stick with an oil absorption pad attached to it to reach as far as possible all around under the cabinets.
Does anyone have any recommendations for getting rid of the smell?
Thanks.
Gary

Re: Diesel smell inside cabin

Tasting a urinal cake is one thing, remembering that you tasted it is something completely different.

Fresh air that is circulating, sunshine and making sure the leak is fixed will eventually get rid of the smell.

I've had good luck with warm water and Dawn dish soap.

Re: Diesel smell inside cabin

Don't eat the big pink mint!

The fuel tank on our boat ruptured and the entire cabin was washed in diesel fuel. After trying many ideas I found that denatured alcohol works well to dissolve the fuel and a follow-up with Simple Green. Alcohol is a liquid that will dissolve in petroleum as well as water, so it works well as an intermediary. Use much more water than you think is necessary. Treat with alcohol, rinse, treat with Simple Green, rinse, repeat. As a follow-on, the air fresheners that plug into a wall outlet, with the aroma circulated with a room fan, helps quite a bit. Upholstery and other fabrics in the cabin will also absorb diesel fuel aroma, but they can go outside and get a sun-tan. By the time we were finished the bilge pump and hoses were clean as new, but do not discharge into the lake!
