The numbers used for refrigerant names, represent the number of “fluorine, hydrogen & carbon” atoms that are in each molecule. The letter at the end of that number represents how those atoms are arranged. So there can be a very big difference between 134 & 134a. Also as I understand that R-134a is not compatible with the oil used in R-12, so if you recharge an R-12 system with R-134a the system must be carefully cleaned out first. There may also be an issue with the material used in the original gaskets not being able to hold up to the new blends
